^{_{Villanelle grew up in a Gelmorran community near the North Shroud. Her community prized itself upon preserving Gelmorran history, particularly those of the arts. Picking up the harp at the age of five, she quickly learned traditional music and compositional skills, piecing together music lost in the ruins, as well as composing her own works. While in the ruins, she would collect as many scores and poetry books as possible, and immersed herself in the lyrics and sonnets of the previous eras, in particular those from the Pact. Her younger brother, Etienne, was also a skilled musician, and it was rumored that Villanelle sabotaged her own singing career to allow him the chance to flourish.}}

It is rumored, however, that she became acquainted with a reclusive, retired Dragoon from Ishgard who frequented Fallgourd Float, and that she was exiled from her home just before the Calamity.}}
